A “high risk” classification by the DOT, CAB reports, and or the insurance companies can be a huge roadblock to the immediate and long-term success of your company. The term “high-risk” refers to the increased likelihood of accidents, damage, or other incidents that can result in financial losses to others.
What determines a High-risk trucking classification? It is typically determined by the following areas: claims, driver experience, and your dot scores. But a “high-risk” designation can also be affected by factors such as the type of cargo being transported, previous business activities, age and condition of the vehicles, and the location of your business.
Whatever the reason you have been labeled a high-risk trucking company, if you want to stay in the trucking industry, DO NOT try to outrun the problem of what is typically a temporary label, and the associated increased costs to stay in business.
More times than not, there are solutions, and we would love to see if we can help. Here are a few things to consider if your current agent, insurance company, or the federal and state databases have designated you as If you are a high-risk commercial truck company.
DO NOT register a new DOT# or MC# authority, or transfer operations to an existing authority, and here’s why!
- From individual drivers, all the way to a trailer in tow, federal, state, AND insurance databases track EVERYTHING about companies with a registered DOT and or MC. Yes, it is very big brother esc, but it is the name of the game. So, either play ball, or find a new sport!
- If you start a new trucking authority or transfer your trucks and drivers to an existing authority, the MULTIPLE databases that track the trucking industry will catch up to these actions (typically) within 45 to 60 days! At this point you will be labeled a “Chameleon Carrier”, and your insurance will VERY LIKELY be canceled and your high-risk commercial truck insurance rates will go up even more!
- Constantly review your DOT scores. If there are any errors, take appropriate action right away.
- Do your best to avoid any additional over-the-road violations. Contact your local DOT office and ask them for inspections and other ways to improve your scores. With infractions and DOT scores time is your best friend if no additional points accumulate.
- Insurance companies expect trucking companies to have claims, but couple that with CONSTANT infractions and high DOT scores is a sign to the insurance company that you and your drivers do not care about safety. High scores can be more of a detriment to your insurance rates than a claim!
- Proactive risk management. As tough as it may be, you may have to let go of any driver with tickets, and that has continual DOT violations. If that is not an option, create an incentive program to reward the best drivers, and help drivers who are struggling with additional training. If a second chance can be given, awesome, but fifth, sixth, seventh and eight chances may not be the best business decision for a trucking company.
