Non-trucking Insurance

What Does Non-Trucking Insurance Mean

It’s a good question, and what does non-trucking insurance cover is a great follow-up question.
When you’re driving a truck for work purposes, you should be covered by your company’s
primary trucking insurance—if you and or the rig you operate are not specifically listed on the
policy, we need to talk to you and the owner of the trucking company ASAP! If the company you
drive for has federal filings, the insurance carrier (in almost all situations) is required to cover
every power unit operated by the company. But what about the times when you’re driving your
truck for personal use, or off the clock? That’s where non-trucking insurance comes in.

Why Non-Trucking Insurance is Important

Non-trucking insurance, also known as bobtail insurance or deadhead insurance, is crucial
because it covers those moments when you’re not under dispatch. It is more or less a “gap”
insurance for the gray area being “off the clock” or driving without a load. This means if you
have an accident while you’re not working, non-trucking insurance helps cover the costs. Without
it, you could be facing hefty out-of-pocket expenses.
What Does Non-trucking Insurance Cover
Non-trucking insurance is designed to cover your liability (damage and injuries to primarily
others) while operating your vehicle.
What Does Non-Trucking Insurance NOT Cover
This insurance does not cover downtime because of an accident. It does not cover physical
damage to your truck. It is not general liability coverage, and it will not cover cargo.
Who Needs Non-Trucking Insurance?
This insurance is specifically designed for truckers who are owner-operators and or leased to a
motor carrier. When you are driving under the motor carrier’s authority, their insurance covers
you. However, when you’re off the clock, their coverage may not apply, and if it does cover you,
you better believe the owner of the trucking outfit is going to be furious to have a claim filed
against his business insurance rather than your non-trucking liability insurance. Non-trucking
insurance fills this gap.
